What an amazing time!!!

The month of November has been full of unforgettable moments …

For example, just last week My orchestral piece, “KEEPERS OF THE KROWN” received its World Premiere in NY at Lincoln Center. The orchestral piece was commissioned by Juilliard and Interlochen, two of the nation’s most prestigious art schools. The piece was played by Juilliard’s Pre-College Orchestra and when I say that these teenagers play way beyond their years, it is a huge understatement.

My time at Juilliard included offering masterclasses on improvisation, speaking with young composers, and speaking in the Creative Ideas class in the Jazz department of the college conservatory. My time there reminded me of parts of my own music education and how much I learned about life. I was lucky enough to have great teachers and mentors and a community of peers. They all played a role in my musical development. Using one’s talents to contribute to excellence and joy is a blessing and a calling. Many of the young people I encounter in various places have accepted this idea and are on that journey. The genre or style of the music they wish to express is irrelevant. The talent, discipline, openness and consistency are key components.

The audience responded very enthusiastically to “KEEPERS OF THE KROWN” and the students played their hearts out. If was also wonderful to meet and talk to the orchestra prior to the concert. The music and the experience took on such a high vibration in every way. I am grateful for the ask and especially thankful for the time spent with the dedicated teachers, staff and students . Their investment in my music was a joyful and at moments overwhelming. That premiere was very very special.

And then….

On that same day I received word that the National Endowment Of The Arts named me as an NEA Jazz Master. This is the highest honor that can be bestowed on a jazz musician in the USA.

I am so honored and grateful for this acknowledgment. The list of past awardees is amazing. Some of the greatest musicians and jazz advocates ever on there!!

Well, I am humbled and excited.

The Year Wraps Up!

One could say that  the start of 2025 presented some challenges. I’ve had some high highs and some low lows.

  • One of my best friends was in a severe hit and run car accident.
  • The Eaton Canyon fire in California took the homes of so many of my neighbors and friends.
  • I made a big career change and resigned from a position in higher education which I dearly loved.
  • Social and political concerns created an environment of feeling ill at ease.
  • Important people in my life made their Transitions .

However… there are so many  blessings.. EVERYDAY.

  • My family and home survived the Eaton Canyon fire.
  • I played many concerts ; Jazz and R&B with my two great bands and staff; and on one occasion, a set of each in one night’s performance!!! (sold out performance at Walt Disney Hall, Los Angeles)
  • I received the composer and arranger of the Year award from the Los Angeles Jazz Society.
  • I reconnected and spent time with family, friends and colleagues I’d not seen in quite some time.
  • The Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra recorded another of my orchestral pieces as part of their music CD series.
  • I met and worked with extraordinary people at Juilliard, The JAZZ Congress, Interlochen and Salt Lick Incubator.
  • Took my first ride on a private jet to play a private show for wonderful fan!
  • Played concerts in TOKYO and OSAKA at Billboard Live Japan.
  • I was honored at the Chicago HOUSE MUSIC CONFERENCE.
  • My likeness is depicted in an amazing art piece by artist Lauren Halsey, called Keepers Of The Krown (for which my orchestral piece is named).
  • I received the honor from the National Endowment For The Arts, of being named an NEA JAZZ MASTER.

I remain inspired, as I challenge myself and my colleagues to continue to strive for excellence and go for the best and big ideas and dreams.  It’s not always easy. I’ll keep striving to learn and  to execute with talent, skills, love passion and a sense of adventure and curiosity in every note!!! I am blessed and grateful for all.

Thank you to all my fans and friends, and ESPECIALLY to my family. To have your support means so much to me.

Stay tuned….
